9th February 1986 - Bob Dylan accompanied by Tom Petty and The Heart-breakers spend two days in a recording studio in Australia recording a new song for the film 'Band of the Hand'.
'Band of the hand' (It's Hell Time, Man!) was written by Dylan between two concerts in New Zealand and Australia and then the team visited Festival Studios in Sydney to record on the 8th and 9th February.
The film story-line (directed by Paul Michael Glaser) is about a group of Juvenile Delinquents trained in being Commando's who then go off to fight a drug dealer. Dylan used this plot line to write the song that talks of Violence and corruption within the system.
The song was produced by Tom Petty and had the full backing of the Heart-breakers and his backup vocals (including Stevie Nicks). Full lineup was Bob Dylan (vocal & guitar), Tom Petty (vocal & guitar, also producer),Mike Campbell (guitar), Benmont Tench (keyboards), Howie Epstein (bass), Stan Lynch (drums), Debra Byrd (backing vocals), Queen Esther Marrow (backing vocals), Stevie Nicks (backing vocals),Madelyn Quebec (backing vocals) and Elisecia Wright (backing vocals).
The single was released on 21st April 1986 under the group Bob Dylan and The Heart-breakers and reached no. 28 on the Billboard Charts. The B side had Joe's Death (Michael Rubini instrumental).
The version of the song that is heard in the film is slightly longer, and has a different mix than that heard on any of the vinyl releases.
